Chartres 2009

While there are but a few days to go, I can’t let this year depart without finally showing you photos of the 2009 Paris-Chartres pilgrimage which takes place every year on the weekend of Pentecost. (See 2008, 2005, 2004). The theme for the upcoming 28th Pilgrimage from Notre-Dame de Paris to Notre-Dame de Chartres was recently announced by the Association Notre-Dame de Chrétienté which organises the event. The 28th Pilgrimage will take place on the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th of May 2010, with the theme “The Church is Our Mother”. The themes for the individual days will be: 1) Teaching, under the patronage of St. Peter; 2) Sanctifying, under the patronage of St. Jean Vianney, the Curé d’Ars; 3) Governing, under the patronage of St. Pius X.

The following photos, however, are compiled from various sources, and show the pilgrimage which took place this past Pentecost.

The pilgrimage lasts three days, and the traditional form of Mass is offered on each day.

On the third day, the pilgrims reach Chartres…

Thank you, Andrew, for this rousing photomontage and commentary. I find it rousing to see so many young adults as pilgrims. A question: is that pale blue uniform (scout-esque with kerchief) some kind of order of Our Lady?

Mr. Hendrix,

Several countries, most notably France, Germany, and Italy, have several national scouting organizations divided by religion. The scouts in the picture are members of Catholic scouting organizations that take part in the annual pilgrimage, unless I am mistaken.

In the United States, the founders of the Boy Scouts of America and Girl Scouts USA shrewdly secured protected status as monopolies by specific exemptions to the anti-trust act, making it impossible for sectarian scouting organizations (or any other kind, for that matter) to be founded. They have been consistant in the enforcement of their trademarks, going after certain scouting organizations (usually religious or politically aligned outfits) while ignoring, for example, the scouting organizations formed here by members of communities displaced by the Soviets (who outlawed scouting) after World War II (the Ukranian Catholic American Plast being notable.)
